The State of EOR: Reckoning, Evolution…or a New Direction?

The EOR market is incredibly loud right now. It is expanding, consolidating, and getting pulled into every conversation about global talent, the extended workforce, and the Future of Work movement.

The problem is quite simple. Employer of Record solutions, technology, and services are far too often viewed and leveraged as a neo security blanket. It is easy enough. It is available whenever a program leader feels uncertain. And it delivers a sense of comfort that feels like compliance, even when it is not.

The real issue is that comfort has become a substitute for clarity. EOR is being used to avoid the classification conversations instead of informing them. It is being applied to workers who do not need employment and being treated as a universal fix instead of a targeted model.

And the market is starting to feel the consequences.

Dennis Rodman And The 1998 Chicago Bulls’ Talent MasterClass

I’m very bullish on what are considered the greatest sports documentaries of all time. Within the realm of basketball, hands down, it’s The Last Dance. Personal bias context: the series premiered during those scary early pandemic days, so it has a special place in my heart. Personal bias context, part two: I was an unabashed 1992 Dream Team fanatic.

Upon rewatching the documentary over the past few weeks, I learned this: The Last Dance is just as much a 10-part talent acquisition masterclass as it is an in-depth overview of the Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls destiny.

Yeah, it has it all: the Bulls drafting MJ to combat the back-to-back Celtics and Pistons dynasties to the first three-peat to MJ’s retirement to the second three-peat (with the Dream Team stuff thrown in, too!). But, what’s truly incredible (speaking from the perspective of someone with 20 years in our industry) is the sheer masterpiece of roster-building by Jerry Krause, Phil Jackson, and the Bulls brass…

…especially the pickup of Dennis Rodman, who may very well be the greatest case study in talent strategy ever captured on film.
